Jim Parsons Picks His Favorite Episode of Season 5

Jim pick: “The Ornithophobia Diffusion”

The paradox of The Big Bang Theory’s Sheldon Cooper (Parsons) is that he’s thoroughly endearing, yet totally incapable of expressing affection. His love interest of three seasons, Amy Fowler (Mayim Bialik), hasn’t been able to nudge him past hand-holding. But in Parsons’s favorite episode of Season 5, The Ornithophobia Diffusion, Sheldon finally learns how to say ‘I love you’… to a blue jay.

“It’s exceptionally silly. It’s exceptionally unlikely. It really gets right up to that suspension of disbelief,” Parsons tells us, describing his love for this particular episode. “For me, that’s one of my greatest joys as an actor … I love the chance to be in this most unlikely scenario, and to live fully and hopefully, believably and honestly in that world.”

Sheldon’s interactions with the bird are actually the B story of the episode, which focuses mainly on a movie date between Leonard (Johnny Galecki) and Penny (Kaley Cuoco). While those two are busy trying to hash out their “just friends” boundaries, Sheldon — who, we learn, has a terrible fear of birds — tries to shoo a stubborn blue jay from the apartment’s windowsill using increasingly desperate measures. (One involves a Boba Fett helmet and a broom.) Undeterred, the bird flies into the apartment.

“We did a lot of pre-taping,” Jim recalls. “The bird coming in and landing in Sheldon’s spot — which I thought was a stroke of genius on the writers’ part — we had to shoot that in segments, obviously. It wasn’t gonna do that in front of an audience.”

With Sheldon forced to confront his ornithophobia head-on, he has a complete change of heart. The idea of bonding with a bird wasn’t so foreign to Parsons, who had a parakeet for fifteen years growing up. At one point during shooting, he communed so enthusiastically with the blue jay that the animal trainer had to step in and tell him to back off. (“I was just like, eye-to-eye with him, and that’s beak-to-eye as far as the dangerous part goes,” Parsons says.) Still, there was one moment of awkwardness with his hollow-boned scene partner.

“The only time I got scared was — and it fit the script in a way — when Sheldon is supposed to pet the bird,” he admits. “Because I thought, well, would bite me. Birds don’t like to be petted … and we only had to do a couple takes or whatever, and he did not ever bite me. But that part kind of freaked me out.”

Bird scenes aside, Parsons says that The Ornithophobia Diffusion highlighted one of his favorite things about working on The Big Bang Theory: exchanging barbs with Galecki. “There’s almost this touch of Vaudevillian banter back and forth, just real quick and real. It’s not natural human speak,” he says. “And so the challenge, of course, is to make it as natural as possible. But there’s great fun in dancing that dance. And for me, there’s a real thrill in feeling like you accomplished that.”

Emmys 2012: ‘Big Bang Theory’s’ Jim Parsons celebrates with juice

Sheldon Cooper might have wanted to celebrate an Emmy nomination with a Settlers of Catan tournament or a pilgrimage to the comic book shop, but actor Jim Parsonshad a much simpler plan Thursday to enjoy his fourth nomination for lead actor in a comedy series for “The Big Bang Theory.”

He said he plans to perform in “Harvey,” the play he’s starring in on Broadway. “I’ll also celebrate with my new favorite drink, a green juice I’m addicted to at a juice bar near me,” he said. “I know it sounds lame, but that’s what I’m doing.”

Parsons has twice won an Emmy for playing Cooper, the uber-nerdy physicist in the hit CBS sitcom, but he said that even going on six years of playing the character, there are still things that remain a challenge.

“The hardest part of playing Sheldon is memorizing the damn thing,” he said. “I’m so grateful we shoot on Tuesday nights. I have all of Saturday and Sunday to cocoon up in my house and recite scientific terms over and over again until they somehow just fall out of my mouth.”

Though costar Mayim Bialik received her first nomination for playing Sheldon’s girlfriend, the rest of the cast was shut out, including Johnny Galecki and Kaley Cuoco.

“I would have preferred to have the whole cast of ‘Big Bang’ nominated,” Parsons said. “But I realize that’s the same thing as a mother saying her child is pretty.”

Luckily, there’s no apparent bad blood between Galecki and Parsons. Not even any friendly rivalry.

“We’re a very peaceful workplace,” Parsons said.

Comic-Con 2012

Romance for Raj, Penny’s last name, Melissa Rauch’s killer impersonation of Mrs. Wolowitz and more fun moments from the CBS comedy’s Friday session.

During Friday’s Comic-Con panel — its first in the massive Hall H — NASA astronaut Richard Searfoss presented co-star Simon Helberg with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to journey to space aboard the Lynx Experience.

After Helberg, a new father, realized that Searfoss was serious he wound up passing — joking that “altitudes give me a lot of gas” and that he’s a picky eater. Ultimately, all the fans of age received envelopes with the chance at winning the flight, with one lucky woman waking away with the golden ticket to space.

With the writers only recently returning to work, a highlight panel from Season 5 was shown and the cast had a ball taking questions from fans.

Here are 11 other fun tidbits from Friday’s panel.

1. Favorite moments: Highlights for the cast and creators included Sheldon holding Amy’s hand, withJim Parsons noting that he enjoys the “exploration of the whole Amy and Sheldon relationship, it’s very fun to see where that’s going — as slowly as that may be,” with co-star Mayim Bialik kissing the screen on which her on-screen partner appeared on via satellite.

2. Dreams do come true: Exec producer Bill Prady, noted his highlight last year was being told that Star Trek icon (and his dream guest star) Leonard Nimoy was on the phone calling about a role on the show’s fifth season, with fellow EP Steve Molaro noting that he jumped up onto the stage to meet the star. Molaro, meanwhile, said his best moment came when he learned that he could shake guest star Stephen Hawking‘s hand — “and getting to know that they actually let you do that,” he added.

3. Howard’s pants: Other quips from the panel included Simon Helberg‘s gem on his wardrobe: “I help with the stuffing,” he said of his tight pants. “It’s a lot of sucking in and hanging,” he laughed.

4. Kaley Cuoco really does understand the show’s all-around geekery — and science: “Why are you guys looking at me?! We went through this last year!” she laughed when the entire cast and creators looked in her direction after a fan asked if everyone understood the technical jargon on the show. The actress, who took heat last year at the Con from loyal fans for her seeming lack of geek cred, defended her ability to fashion Star Trek‘s “live long and prosper” hand gesture and received support from Prady, who noted she has difficulty fashioning the finger separation. Cute overload.

5. As for spoilers, EP Chuck Lorre teased that after Raj’s (Kunal Nayyar) unfortunate love affair with his iPhone’s Siri, the series has a fun follow-up planned for the guy who is unable to speak to women without booze. “We have a romance planed for Raj this year — wait until you see it!” he offered.

6. Will there ever be a crossover between Lorre’s Two and a Half Men and Big Bang? Lorre said any one of the guys could easily be a tutor for Men’s Jake. “He’s quite a knucklehead,” he joked.

7. The panel, which has featured the unseen voice of Howard’s mom last year and a live performance by the Barenaked Ladies the year prior, had another hugely fun moment when the cast sang “Soft Kitty” — in the round and almost totally on key. Impressive! A close second this year? Melissa Rauch plugging Bialik’s book on parenting — in a voice impersonating Howard’s unseen mother — asking if Howard would be interested in experimenting with adult breast feeding.

8. Cuoco — whose Penny is a waitress at the Cheesecake Factory — shared that she got a ton of looks from people when she went out to dinner at the Cheesecake Factory. “It took me a long time to realize why they were looking at me,” she said, noting that she now tends to avoid dining there.

9. “I’m just a professional and I stay focused,” Parsons deadpanned in a very Sheldon fashion when a fan asked how he didn’t break character. Bazinga!

10. Weeks! That’s how long it took the crew to put together the Lego Death Star featured on the show. “It was a few nervous breakdowns around that Death Star,” Lorre said. Added Prady: It was originally cut from the episode it was supposed to be in but the series later added it to a subsequent episode in order to keep the poor woman who was tasked with putting it together.

11. “I think she’s just like Cher, she just goes by one name,” Cuoco joked about if Penny’s last name would ever be revealed. “Worst series finale reveal: Penny Jones,” Lorre laughed.

Johnny Galecki‘s flight from Iraq, where he was on a USO tour,  was delayed and he was unable to attend the panel.

The whole cast will be there, but Jim Parsons will appear via satellite.

Comic-Con is a week away and the biggest comedy on TV is ready to take the biggest stage at the annual pop culture fiesta. The cast and producers of The Big Bang Theory are making their annual trek to the San Diego Convention Center on Friday, July 13, holding court in the iconic 6,500-seat Hall H. Adam Savage, co-host of Discovery’s Mythbusters, will moderate the panel, from 12:05pm to 1:05pm.

The Q&A session will feature cast members Kaley Cuoco, Johnny Galecki, Simon Helberg,Kunal Nayyar, Mayim Bialik and Melissa Rauch, and executive producers Chuck Lorre, Bill Prady and Steven Molaro. Jim Parsons, currently starring on Broadway in the revival of Harvey, will appear via satellite. The Big Bang panel always provides some of the top highlights of the Con, including a sing-along of the show’s theme song led by the Barenaked Ladies in 2010, and Rauch’s hilarious impersonation of Mrs. Wolowitz last year.

The cast will also have an autograph-signing session (details here) and TV Guide Magazine‘s Rob Moynihan will host a Q&A with Prady and Molaro on Warner Bros.’ Extra stage (adjacent to the convention center) on Friday at 3pm.

The Big Bang Theory gets even bigger —for the first time ever in Hall H! Series stars and executive producers will be on hand to answer burning questions (liftoff! handholding! was that really Mrs. Wolowitz?) and tease what’s to come in season six. Hall H. Friday, July 13.

Sheldon as Princess Leia :)

Parsons says Sheldon’s union suit, while completely out of the ordinary, have only one affect on him. “In a weird way, it didn’t affect anything except, ‘I need a bigger shirt,’ ” he says, noting that the long johns made for a long day on the set. “Two weeks ago I was in a French maid costume and that I talked themdown from. They wanted to put me in the Princess Leia slave uniform in a bikini and I said, ‘No, I’d need six months’ warning and a personal trainer and it’s not happening.’ They were very sweet to me and said, ‘OK, we didn’t know what your boundaries were.’ (Laughing.) Maybe Season 7 if we’re around and I can prep for it.”

Jim Parsons prepares for a scene in which Sheldon sports a pair of long johns — aka a union suit — to prevent the spread of the germs that (naturally!) lurk in rental tuxedos as the guys are fitted for Howard’s wedding to Bernadette. “As an actor, I’ve always had a very distinctive relationship with costumes,” Parsons says. “One of my favorite things in the world is costumes because they speak things that you don’tneed to speak. They change a character just by putting something on but what’s great about them is they can have their own life.”

During a scene where the guys are being fitted for tuxedos, the writers added in a line of dialogue to reference Sheldon’s favorite comic book character, The Flash, taking advantage of his red long johns. “The Flash rewrite was a really good example of when the writers come in with changes in a scene,” Parsons explains. “It’s an inspired choice. There is a certain level of inspiration that only strikes when the gun is to your head in a weird way. You feel that was an example from the writers, that wasn’t a difficult joke to make but it couldn’t be made until it was in the moment because it was a reflection of the costume which they hadn’t seen fully until then,” Parsons says of the new line. “Just looking on camera, it’s ‘This would work perfectly here.’

Parsons says the addition of Bialik’s Amy stands out as his “favorite thing that’s happened in the past year and a half of the show.” “The introduction of Amy as a character has brought many possibilities for Sheldon. I enjoy working with Mayim and it would be my personal preference that she never be allowed to work with anybody else,” he says with a laugh. “She should do all her scenes with me! That said, it wouldn’t be good for her or the show and in the end it wouldn’t be good for me but that’s how much I enjoy playing those scenes with her in all their different and strange forms.”

And we came to this moment. We saw the last episode of season 5… It is one episode that deserves to be called final episode. It has all elements: drama, comedy, love story, wedding…

For the start Howard went to space and got the girl! But with Leonard and Penny things are still pretty awkward. On the other hand, Sheldon and Amy’s relationship definitely goes forward. I really don’t want to spoil moments for those who didn’t watch it, so I will just give you some hints: episode is in the same time really funny and emotional, so you will have mixed feelings :)

One of the sweetest moments in the whole season 5 happened: Bernadette grab Raj’s hand, Penny grab Leonard’s hand, and remarkably Sheldon grab Amy’s hand. So enjoy, and see you in season 6 :)

Best quotes:

Sheldon: “Boldly go, Howard Wolowitz.”

Bernadette:” I love that man.”
Raj: “Me too.”

Howard’s mother: “Speak up!”
Howard: “From now on she’s the only woman who can yell at me!”

Amy: “Bernadette, I want to thank you for allowing me to be your maid of honor. I also want you to know that I will be happy to do it again if this marriage craps out.”

Sheldon: “Would you like some aloe vera? You just got burned.”

Penny:” I can’t believe it. This whole time, a small part of me thought he was lying.”

Sheldon: “The need to find another human being to share one’s life with has always puzzled me. Maybe because I’m so interesting all by myself. With that being said, may you find as much happiness with each other as I find on my own.”

Bernadette’s father: “Here ya go.”
Bernadette: “Here ya go? What am I? A football?”
Bernadette’s father: “Like that guy could catch a football.”

Howard: “There’s fuel leaking and we’re still gonna go?”
Cosmonaut: “Don’t lose your Fruit Loops, Fruit Loops.”

Sheldon: “I’ll do it provided I can perform the service in Klingon.”
Bernadette: “No.”
Sheldon: “What do you see in her?”

Amy: “Oh my gosh. I can’t believe my maid of honor dress will be on Google Earth.”

Sheldon: “He asked her during coitus.”
Howard: “Did he get down on one knee or were you already there?”

Leonard: “Come on, Sheldon. It will be fun.”
Sheldon: “That’s what you said about the Green Lantern movie. You were 114 minutes of wrong.”

Leonard: “Come on, Raj, we’re ready to start.”
Raj:
“We’re ready, when I say we’re ready.”

Howard is scared to go to space. Leonard makes another error, this time it didn’t end the relationship with Penny, but I think it is worst to ask somebody to marry you than to say I love you, but what do I know :).

Some people love Amy, but lot of them dislike her. But I think she is very funny character, and in this episode her smartness comes out in best possible way. She played Sheldon perfectly! Now she has new experiment – to seduce Sheldon with his favorite things. I will just say: Star Trek doctor, Super Mario Brothers theme, strawberry Quik…

Leonard and Sheldon also had really funny conversation about woman while playing a game of Tri-D Chess. Also we found out that Leonard gave Sheldon a book about woman that gave him nightmares :). If you like Sheldon and Amy story line you will find this episode pretty amazing, but on the other hand if you like Raj it will be really disappointing because we barely saw him, I really hope that he still has that cute dog :). Enjoy the last moments of season 5, only one episode remains…

Quotes:

Leonard: “What are you doing?”
Amy: “We’re playing doctor. Star Trek style.”
Sheldon: “I’m in hell, Leonard. Don’t stop.”

Sheldon: “Can I ask you a question about women?”
Leonard: “I got you that book last year, wasn’t everything in there?”

Sheldon: “Amy has embarked on a campaign to increase my feelings for her, by making me happy.”

Bernadette’s father: “You go up to that space station and you make me proud.”
Howard: “Um, okay.”
Bernadette’s father:” You got a problem with that?”
Howard: “All right, look, I’m going to level with you. I’m terrified about going into space. What if I don’t make it back?”
Bernadette’s father: “It’s gonna be okay, son.”
Howard: “You really think so?”
Bernadette’s father: “Of course. A pretty girl like Bernadette … she’ll find a new guy.”

Sheldon: “I love strawberry Quik. It’s my favorite pink fluid narrowly beating out Pepto-Bismol.”

Leonard: “I’m sorry! I did, I crossed a line I didn’t mean to.”
Penny: “Who says something like that right in the middle of sex?”
Leonard: “I don’t know, it just came out! People say weird things during sex all the time.”
Penny: “Okay, well they sure as hell don’t say that.”
Leonard: “It was heat of the moment.”
Penny: “No, the heat of the moment is “Oh yeah, just like that.” Not “will you marry me?” “
Leonard: “I’m sorry, just-just give me another chance.”
Penny: “Why, so you can crawl under the covers and go, “Hey, baby, wanna go look for houses in neighborhoods with good schools?” “

Sheldon: “I look like the Flash about to be married.”

Howard: “Yes! Thank you! Oh! Oh … I’m not gonna die in space! I’m gonna die the way God intended in my late 50s with a heart full of pastrami.”

Howard: “Let me explain the difference between you and me. You watch ‘Star Trek'; I live it.”
Raj: “Oh, please, I don’t remember the episode of ‘Star Trek’ where the guy never goes to space and brags about it in a tuxedo store.”
Howard: “Make all the jokes you want. There is only one of us here brave enough to almost do what I almost did.”

Sheldon: There is only one mind expanding drug this man enjoys, and that’s called school.

Howard: “That’s it. My orders have been rescinded. I’m officially no-go to space.”
Leonard: “I’m sorry Howard, but I’ve gotta tell you: I’m a little relieved you’re not going.”
Howard: “Why?”
Leonard:  “C’mon. You were going to go up in a rocket designed in the 1960s by the Russians.”
Howard: “Yeah, so?”
Leonard: “When was the last time you went to Best Buy and heard someone say, ‘Oh, check out this Blu-ray player; it must be good, it was built in Russia.”

Amy: “With our friends moving forward in their relationships, I’ve decided that we should make progress in ours as well.”
Sheldon: “Oh, dear lord. Two years ago we didn’t even know each other, and now I’m in your apartment after dark. How much faster can this thing go?”

Mr. Rostenkowski: [Showing Howard his photo album] Last murder case I worked before I retired. How many bodies do you see there? Careful, it’s a trick question.”
Howard: “I’m … not sure.”
Mr. Rostenkowski: “Ah, you’ll never get it. It’s a fraction.”

Other facts:

  • Mr Rostenkowski (played by Casey Sander) will be introduced in this episode.
  • Mr. Rostenkowski has a cupboard full of shotguns.
  • Penny has a tattoo of The Cookie Monster, a popular Muppet from Sesame Street, somewhere on her body.

5.22 “The stag convergence”- Review

In this episode we had opportunity to see lots of different characters such as Wil Wheaton, Barry Kripke and Stuart. Sheldon got drunk on whiskey and his toast was classic Sheldon, Raj brought back some fun memories from series past an he had lot of funny moments, too. We had Penny/Leonard storylines, but in this episode everything is about Howard  and Bernadette. She was hurt because  Howard never told her about any of his sexual history, and she is ready to call off the whole thing. It is preatty funny episode with lots of neardy moments and you should watch it :) .

Best quotes:

Sheldon: (taking a sip of whiskey) ” Jeepers, that’s yucky!”
Leonard: “It’s a little early to start dropping J-bombs, don’t you think?”

Howard: “I’d be Kanga-Jew, the first of my people to dunk a basketball.”

Leonard: “Hey, Wil! Nice of you to make it out tonight for Howard.”
Wil Wheaton: “ Well, it was either this or another hot tub party at George Takei’s house.”

Sheldon: “Howard, I wish you nothing but happiness. Bazinga! I don’t! Double-Bazinga! I do!”

Howard: “She was my second cousin.”
Sheldon: “And the first person you disappointed sexually — bada-bazinga!”

Amy: “I’m curious what’s bothering you most: the borderline incest, the prostitute or group sex with the girl dressed as the children’s cartoon?”

Sheldon: “I just threw up the bachelor party.”

Amy: “Perhaps you should give him a taste of his own medicine. Do you have a cousin who you find attractive?”

Bernadette: “Zip it, pervert!”

Penny: “I mean the warnings signs were there, this is definitely on you.”

Bernadette: “I heard — your voice, not unlike your mother’s, travels through walls.”

Sheldon: “I wish you could all be inside my head. The conversation is sparkling!”

Other facts:

  • Bernadette’s apartment number is 306.
  • Sheldon refers to Howard as a “good friend,” unlike in The Bozeman Reaction where he referred to him as “a treasured acquaintance”.
  • Penny calls the guys the Lost Boys, a reference to the characters in J.M. Barrie’s famous work, Peter Pan.
  • Raj says, “This grasshopper is kicking my ass-hopper.” In The Love Car Displacement, he said, “these mimosas are kicking my little brown ass.”
  • When the guys are discussing the animals they want to be fused with, Howard and Raj happen to be dressed in clothing with colors matched with the animals they answered; Raj is wearing white for swan while Howard is wearing brown for kangaroo.
  • Howard revealed that he lost his virginity to his second cousin in Season 3’s The Adhesive Duck Deficiency. His tryst with the “Jewish hooker” in Las Vegas occurred in Season 2’s The Vegas Renormalization.
